Tamil Nadu government has approved a new Battery Energy Storage Systems Policy, 2026, with an aim to attract private investment and establish the State as a major hub for energy storage.
The policy targets the installation of at least 2.5 gigawatts, or 10 gigawatt-hours, of battery energy storage capacity over the next three years.
The initiative is expected to strengthen grid stability, manage peak-hour electricity demand and improve the integration of renewable energy.
Tamil Nadu currently has an installed renewable energy capacity of nearly 29.8 gigawatts.
